Village Smokehouse - nah, not the next time

We were in Brookline Village, so we decided to check it out tonight, but weren't too thrilled with the outcome.

I had the sliced beef brisquet and companion had the pulled pork sandwich. Both were dry with meat that, while lean and not too dry, didn't have any flavor (i.e. smoky, melt-in-your-mouth flavor). The beef was sliced thinly with very little fat. However, it was clearly cooked far in advance (even more obvious based on the two minutes it took to arrive after we ordered). I know BBQ places can't cook to order, but it would be nice if it was at least finished when we ordered it. Does anyone share this sentiment?

The sauce was good though - tangy, not very spicy, a little sweet. Everything else was fine, but nothing stood out. The cornbread was good - a little sweetness initially, although it was dry in the middle.

Overall, the Smokehouse doesn't doesn't hold up to Red Bones.

The service was okay, but the waitress seemed disinterested. The dining room was slow, so I think they just were bored and maybe unhappy to be there on a down night.

Don't think I will be returning. Anyone have suggestions for the next time I am in Brook. Vill? Village Fish? I've heard Matt Murphy's is good, but overpriced. Is Sichuan Garden down there?
