Chowhounds rejoice! The great Phil has finally reopened. At the tiny Village deli in Wyandanch he had been dishing up great jerk chicken and other Jamaican specialties for years. Unfortunately, it's been closed for several months (it's now a pet store).
I'm happy to report that Phil is cooking up a storm at his new place, Island Choice in Wheatly Heights. Phil and his crew completely remodeled the storefront and it looks amazing. It's a lot bigger than the old place and they have a wider selection of dishes avaiable at the same time. Parking is also much easier, now that the restaurant is in a shopping center.
I know a lot of poeple go for the jerk chicken, but Phil's other stuff is amazing also. At the very least try out brown stew chicken, ackie and fish, curry goat and oxtails.
Here's some real insider info, Phil occasionally makes some other dishes that you have to ask for. One is macaroni and cheese. He uses habenero peppers in it. I also heard that he makes great plantains, but I haven't been lucky enought to try them yet.
