Vik's Chaat House

Thanks to the encouragement of many chowhounds at the Louie’s banquet, Steven and I finally made our first visit to the famed Vik's Chaat House. As suggested, we got there right when they opened to avoid the long lines.

Since it was only the two of us, we ordered only three dishes, which turned out to be just right for such an early meal. The Bhel Phuri, which everyone had raved about, was excellent. The tamarind in this crisp puffed rice salad gave it a kick of sweetness that balanced out the spices nicely. We also ordered the Samosa Cholle, which was tasty and filling, but what I liked best was the dosa. The texture was a bit chewier and more substantial than dosas I’ve had in the past. I especially enjoyed the fragrant, spicy lentil soup that came with the dosa; for me, it was the highlight.

We washed everything down with a yummy strawberry lassi. As we were finishing our meal, the owner came over to our table and chatted with us for a few minutes. He suggested that we try one of their specialty kebabs on our next visit. On the way out, we bought a sample box of their dessert pastries. I wasn’t crazy about any of them, but Steven loved their density.

I noticed that they sell the dosa mix next door in the warehouse. Has anyone tried it?

Thanks again, chowhounds, for your enthusiastic suggestions. We’ll definitely be back.
