Victoria - Fernwood Inn

The Fernwood Inn has been seriously renovated since I last visted it as the George and Dragon. It is in a bustling trendy neighborhood across the street from the Belfry Theatre in the Fernwood area of Victoria BC. I am in town visiting friends and the Fernwood was recommended from a couple of different sources, including Chowhound, so we decided to try it out for dinner tonight. Thanks to those that recommended it because we certainly enjoyed our meals.

The menu is a bit on the casual side with lots of appys and casual meals. The wine list was very reasonable but not very adventurous. They do offer five reds and five whites by the glass for $6 - $7. We started with the cheese plate which offered some blue, some smoked and some brie cheese with a raspberries, grapes and local figs - nice touch! Beautifully presented and a nice selection but a cheese knife would have made sharing easier.

A casual meal of halibut/avocado burgers was served with a good sized salad. A nice selection of mixed greens and a light raspberry vinaigrette - not just an afterthought! The buns were lovely with the halibut, just soft enough and just crispy enough to fill us up after a hard day of shopping. The fish was well cooked and a nice size. We were certainly pleased with the quality and value of our meal.

The ambiance of the Fernwood is lively. On a rainy Thursday night at 7:30 the place was packed and a bit loud. The renovations are well done and the place is quite cozy but bright. The drink special of a Long Island Iced tea for $4 was an excellent buy. The service was definately the weakest link. Our server was fine but a bit indifferent and distracted. She was pretty inattentive but to be fair the place was pretty busy.

All around, quite a fun place for a casual night out.
