While biking through Brooklyn, I must have tried at least 25 different random slices of pizza, a great majority of which were subpar. Today I lucked out--the square slice at Vic's on Kings Highway and West 7th St. (or 8th) was excellent. It was fresh, with nice clean sauce, a uniformly cooked crust, seemingly better cheese (but still just pizza cheese--it's a simple operation, not DiFara) and, well, it just came together brilliantly.
The pastry shop next door was pretty good--I had a very pleasant sfogliatelle. Don't make the same mistake I did and have it covered in powdered sugar on a windy day. My jacket now looks like I'd had a rough night at Studio 54.
I'm digging the land of the N train in and around Bensonhurst--it seems like fertile chow territory.
