"Vertically Roasted Duck" at Da Silvano - Yes!

Simon | Sep 18, 200809:55 AM

Have rediscovered a love for Da Silvano during the last few weeks...the octopus salad and eggplant parmesean (the latter a little overpriced) are decent...the fried calamari quite good...the scallop crudo gussied up w/ a couple berries and heirloom tomato slivers, but would be very tasty even without the embellishments...all solid but not quite worth a clarion call...but when, on a very hungry lark the other night, i ordered the "vertically roasted duck" off the specials list: i got a real treat...

At 28 bucks, this is one of the best lusciously-prepared-protein-per-dollar deals at an upscale restaurant anywhere in town...it's half of a huge duck, crispy skin and leg, succulent thigh and breast, and crackling neck tucked underneath...it's not a meal, but an evening's entertainment...a hour and half later (accompanied by a couple glasses of Italian pinot noir) i'd managed to finish the whole thing (and about a half pound of sauteed spinach) much to surprise and envy of nearby diners...as i'd started w/ the scallop crudo and some white wine, and ended w/ a glass of anisey grappa, this was one of my fav start to finish meals of the past month...an Atkins Tuscan Dream of a meal...

Footnote: i like my duck on the crispy/well-done side, so the Da Silvano version was perfect for me...i suspect that some chowhounds prefer their duck a bit more rare...given that this is such a giant portion, i was perfectly happy to accept some dry sections in what was overall a delightfully crisp fowl...so i'll had that small warning so that no one is too disappointed if they find it a bit well-done for their taste...
