Vernick....WTF AMAZING!

Ok so my old friend took me to Vernick tonight on a whim. He has excellent taste and I trust him. He did not oversell or even tell me much about the place before tonight. We just went. Let me tell you this was one of my favorite and best Philadelphia restaurant experiences in a long time. The food was seemingly simple up front and only after further inspection and tasting did the true complexity and balance of flavors of each dish come to full light. All of the food was balanced and perfectly seasoned. The flavors were harmonious as was the service and staff. All pleasant and competent without being over the top. The dishes we received were as follows......
Beef Tartare ( ridiculously perfect!), Charred spinach and fontina on toasted bread, Spanish Mackerel with black truffle ( i tried this because I was positive that this would not work, I was wrong it was so good. I did not detect a strong truffle flavor but enough that it was an underpinning to the mackerel and fresh herbs and spicy sauces, Sea Urchin/eggs (WTF, a classic perfect end of days kind of dish. One of my favorite dishes now of all time. If you like cozy eggs meets urchin sea perfection this is the dish for you. A big hug from the sea and land. Pea Ravioli and rabbit with mint ( the mint made the dish over the top perfect and balanced with a hint of the middle east.) We also got Grilled Octopus and that came with an interesting olive sauce and finely cubed finnochio and roasted sweet tomatoes. One dish was better than the next. We also got some excellent and strong ginger and lime soda drinks that were the perfect foil to the meal. We did not try any deserts but will when I return. It looks like they have a giant $62 seafood extravaganza that is roasted in the wood fired oven that I would like to try as well as a large Amish roasted chicken that looked amazing also.
