We decided to do a long weekend in Vt so - here it is

Curtis BBQ - Putney
We always stop at Curtis just off the highway in Putney for a BBQ fix - this time it was on the way up. We were all starving and it was a great sunny , cool early evening - so we all had combos: ribs and chicken. If you love vinegary BBQ - this is the stop for you! Curtis is always there cooking right in the pit alongside his iconic blue bus!

Tokai-Tei at teh Old Town Farm Inn - Chester
The boys wanted to do some sushi ( I know I know - Vt mountains and all that ) , so we did some asking around and off we went to Tokai -Tei , AND IT WAS GREAT! When we called to make a reservation - they asked if we could take a later seating as they had a big group at 6:00 and wanted to make sure they could handle everyone. When we got there , it was a small inn dining room and the other group was 8 people - - all Japanese , speaking Japanese and clearly having a great time. We were seated promptly by the owner and got to the menu - it was not your typical sushi house menu - more a Japanese menu with sushi.......we started with Edamame to nibble on - prepared prefectly! The boys ordered sushi - also prepared very differently than your typical sushi house - but the guys loved every morsel. I ordered the Unagi Kabayaki (eel) the specialty of the house - and it was SUPERB! Never had it before - but I thought about it all weekend......cant wait to try it again sometime. We finished up with some green tea ice cream - - yummmm.

Mulligans - Manchester
It was late after a day of golf in Manchester and a visit to Hildene - so we popped into Mulligans. Great sports pub atmosphere, great , friendly service. We selected 2 orders of wings to start - regular and smoked . Wings were nice and meaty - and we grazed them down to the bones. We all ordered steaks - rib eyes they had on special that night and they were cooked perfectly to order and melted in our mouths (yes we were hungry again) . We ate in the bar pub area - lots of tvs and the boys could catch up on the days games! Definitely would go back for a great pub menu and friendly service....

Sugar Bush Farms - Woodstock
Not a dining locale - but we did pop up the road after walking around at Billings farm to go get some of our favorite cheeses and syrups! They have an outstanding tasting room and will go over all their cheeses and syrups with you. Small farm animals to walk around and see and the Maple Syrup operation not working obviously - but you can walk to back of farm and see how ti is set up and works.....picked 3 of our favorite cheeses, a quart of Grade B syrup, indulged in the jellies and mustard's tasting table and bought a few of those as well !

Vermont Country Store - Weston
We don't buy any cheeses or smoked meats here mostly because its overpriced and not a great selection - BUT I DO LOVE THEIR old fashioned PENNY CANDY CORNER!!! So we filled up on lots of Retro Candy - bought a few retro toys and headed down the road - love my retro candy!

Shepherds Pie on the Green - Quechee
We got up to the Quechee area late - so we spent most of our time at the new facility over at the Vermont Institute of Natural Science , swung by Simon Pearce and they were already booked for lunch - I noticed a place called Shepherds Pie across the parking lot - so off we went. Now - I am a HUGE fan of Shepherds Pie and so not only was I hungry - but now had my heart set on Shepherds Pie! We went in - mostly a deli style set up . they did indeed have Shepherds pie - which I ordered - the boys ordered a specialty roast beef sandwich they had that day and a Burrito special. I took one bite of my Shepherds pie- IT WAS THE WORST I HAVE EVER HAD in my life - I dont even want to explain all that was wrong with it - and when I tell you I HARDLY ever send food back - THIS ONE I TOOK BACK TO THE COUNTER MYSELF - NOW to be fair - they offered to make another - but at that point I was no longer hungry, really killed the full bear appetite I walked in with - I just had some of the others food - WHICH was excellent.....the owner was mortified - appropriately so and wanted to make me anything I wanted on the house- but I seriously was no longer that hungry , so I declined - I did tell him when we finished that the other 2 dishes were very good - - - I left and my husband paid - so he gave my husband a package of desserts for us to take out with us! So - go there - but DO NOT ORDER THE SHEPHERDS PIE !

Lawrence Smokehouse - Newfane
We stop here also regularly , usually on the way home and a stop at the Townshend Dam - to stock up on some smoked meats and jerky - seems like they didn't have as big a selections as last time we were there - but then again - big season is the fall.......which we usually do a Vt trip - anyway - got some great smoked chicken sausage and bacon! also Jerky!
