Ventura County Thai, and bagging on Cholada Thai

Snackish | Nov 8, 200607:20 PM     2

My favorite Thai places in Ventura County are, I think, in order
Chai Thai in Oxnard
Blue Elephant in Port Hueneme
Charn Thai in Camarillo
Pookie's Westlake Thai
Tipp's Thai, Ventura
Sawadee Thai, Camarillo

Thai places I do not like
Exotic Thai in Thousand Oaks and Agoura (Agoura purely for bad service - no one ever waited on us, so we left before ever getting a menu)
Cholada Thai, Ventura (see below)
Little Thai, Camarillo

Mr Snackish and I gave Cholada Thai on Main Street in downtown Ventura last night. It was a slow evening with only 2 other tables.

I give it a thumbs down, as did Mr. S. We got all vegetarian food - a spring roll that was fairly standard, with a nice tangy dipping sauce. A yellow vegetable curry that was totally lacking in flavor. And a pad see-ew that had such an off flavor that both he and I just took one bite. It just had a nasty taste, a bit sour like an old dishrag, with a weird undertone of porkiness. And brown rice that was neither brown nor that cool purplish rice some thai places (Sawadee in Camarillo) serve - it looked like it was trying to be purplish, but failed along the way.

Service was odd and lackluster. One person took our appetizer order. Another came and took our food order and took the appetizer plates with a bit of attitude. When our appetizer came, the server did not bring back appetizer plates, so we ate our apps on our dinner plates, which were not replaced even though they had sauce all over them.

The server noted that we had not eaten the pad see-ew and asked if we wanted it boxed. We both said no. They asked if we did not like it and we explained that it tasted bad to us. They made no comment and did not take it off the bill. We didn't ask, but it would have been nice.

Free dessert of a scoop of coconut ice cream and fried bananas in spring roll wrapper was good. It wasn't a comp for the bad food, because they brought it before the discussion.

Another one bites the dust.
