Last night, catchow and I moseyed out to Ashland (just over the border from Framingham) to Chennai Woodlands, a South Indian vegetarian place. I'm pretty sure this used to be Udipi Bhavan. It's in a little shopping plaza next to a larger Market Basket Plaza on Rte 126.

It's named for Chennai Putnam, which is Madras's new name. Features many, many dosas, uthappams and other fab things. We shared an incredible Bhindi Masala (okra) curry, a special masala dosa (crepe with spicy chutney, sauteed onion, tomato and potato filling) and an onion & chile uthappam.

This last was a rice flour / chickpea flour pancake with the chiles and onions cooked in -- like a thin, searingly spicy-hot and delicious latke (if you were to use mashed instead of grated potatoes, heaven forbid). You dip it in hot chile paste or cocoanut butter or lentil soup. Aiieee.

The flavors were so fresh, it blew other Indian I've had out of the water. (My other latest fave is Kabab and Tandoor in Waltham). I especially liked how you could taste the flowery-sweet flavor of the chiles right before the heat kicked in.

Dinner entrees run 6.95-7.95. Appetizers (idli, vada, pakora, bajji, samosa...) are $3.25-$4.00.
