well michael mina's was my first find dining experience as a pregnant woman. they were very willing to substitute on the cookbook tasting menu. however, i got the feeling that there was not really an understanding of what being pregnant meant, and it was just kind of communicated that i wanted substitutions.
the first course was the tuna tartare so obvious mine had to be substituted. i was skeptical as the server suggested the foie gras with the ginger sauce. i said, really? the foie gras would be fully cooked? got a confirmation.
so first the chef didn't want to serve the foie gras before the lobster pot pie so while the boys had the tuna tartare i had the lobster pot pie. then when they had the pie i had the foie gras. it was pretty rare. i had two small bites while contemplating whether i should proceed to risk it. it was really good. another server saw and came to ask if everything was okay. i explained that i'm pg and am not supposed to eat anything raw. this guy got it and took it back for them to cook it further and said they'll prepare all my dishes cooked. so the cod and the kobe beef were done that way and i was a happy camper after that.
i thought the entire meal was great, but not spectacular. the flavor combinations, while really good, did not offer any excitement. don't get me wrong, the dinner was great despite my little special needs and i did not feel the extra cooking took away from the texture. it's just i didn't get any surprises in the flavors, like wow, i would have never thought of putting these together and they were outstanding!
tonight we'll have picasso for my birthday, let's see how that one goes :)
