Took my daughter to Vecchia Roma on Watertown Street in Newton last night after hearing great things about it here and elsewhere. I have to say, it was easily one of the best Italian meals I've had in a while. The hostess was incredibly warm and welcoming and the room is small but charming (and was packed on a Tues night!). Fresh bread came with a delicious chopped olive spread, not too salty and probably a blend of several olive types. We split a Caesar salad with a perfectly balanced homemade dressing. Plenty of anchovy and garlic, with cheese sprinkled on top rather than dominating the dressing. I had the gnocchi in a tomato basil sauce and smoked mozzarella..they melted in my mouth and the sauce was delicate and tasty. My daughter had the lasagna Veneziana, which was 2 individual rolls stuffed w/spinach, leeks and fresh ricotta. In a nutmeg-laced tomato cream sauce....fabulous. We passed on dessert, but as we were leaving the hostess presented us with a small panettone for the holidays. Bill came to ~$50, including tip and a liter of San Pellegrino.

I will definitely return...can't wait to try other items!!
