I was on an exchange program in Ecuador for 5 weeks in 1999, and while I was there, my host mother always used a certain brand of vanilla extract. I bought a few bottles to bring home with me, and I just recently used the last bit of it.
Every time I used the vanilla to bake, people (including myself) commented that the baked goods (whether brownies or chocolate chip cookies, etc.) had a taste of cinnamon. I remember talking to my host mother briefly about this, and I THOUGHT she said that the vanilla and the cinnamon come from the same plant. This I am almost positive is not true, I probably did not understand exactly what she said (my spanish is not perfect).
The bottle says "esencia pura de vainilla" and I assume it is pure vanilla. So why might it give a cinnamon flavor to baked goods?
