Vacuum-sealed bags: worth the cost for keeping foods longer?

It's just me and my honey at home. A lot of times we're too busy to cook. A lot of food in the fridge goes bad and gets thrown out.

Yeah, I know, we should be buying groceries in smaller quantities, but large quantities are cheaper, and we keep telling ourselves that we'll cook more often... We stick things in the freezer, but they inevitably end up with freezer burn, even if well-wrapped.

So, I've been hearing about these vacuum-sealing contraptions, such as the FoodSaver. Are they fabulous? Are these machines sturdy enough for years of use? The rolls of replacement bags seem awfully expensive - are the costs justified because the foods you seal would keep much longer?

Your opinions would be appreciated. Thank you.
