Utopia Cafe @ SF Chinatown - great Chinese- Review

Han Lukito | Nov 7, 200210:58 AM

Thanks to Yimster and other posters for spotting this place. It is a great small Chinese restaurant in Chinatown. It is quite small with 8 or so tables. The display on the outside shows a few of their dishes. I do not come here for decor or ambiance, but the food is great and a bit home style. Here are the details:

Claypot chicken and salted fish: it has lots of soft tofu pieces. The flavor of the salted fish clearly sings with this dish. The small pieces of chicken and the thickened sauce meld perfectly. This is a great dish if you like salted fish. Some people hates the smell and flavor of salted fish(like mini anchovies). This place seems to have strength with this type of dishes.

Rock cod with sweet and sour sauce: fresh pieces of fish, dusted with bread crumbs and fried just right. Sauce is sweet and slightly thickened but not goopy. Very fresh fish and not a hint of unfreshness. Another excellent dish.

Thick Sliced of pork belly (Bacon) with preserved veg (Kao Yuk): tender pieces, melt in your mouth. The sauce is dark, salty and rich. The preserved vegetables are also tasty. This dish is excellent.

House special pan fried noodle: thin noodle variety with pieces of calamari, chicken and vegetables. The flavor here is excellent which shows the skill of the chef.

There was one lady(owner ?) who helped us with our choices. We asked her what is the place specialties and she speaks English perfectly. Glad we asked. The other waitresses were not so fluent.

This will be one of our regular stops among many others in SF.
