Unique Jasmine opened recently in the food court of Northgate Mall in San Rafael, offering Burmese and Chinese selections from the steam table. However, many of the Burmese dishes are not available currently, taped over on the overhead menu board. Owned by a Burmese-Chinese husband and wife team, they told me that they have decided to hold back on offering the full Burmese menu. The husband explained that they have to educate customers about Burmese food and will have more items when business picks up. Otherwise, they had too much food go to waste at the end of the day. During my short time at the counter, five out of six customers chose from the Chinese side of the table.
A hired cook prepares the Chinese dishes, and the Burmese couple makes the Burmese dishes, for now. They were generous in offering tastes, speared on a toothpick, before making a decision. The steam table photo shows the current Burmese selections: coconut chicken (scooping out), chicken curry and beef curry. The sample of beef curry was a chunk of tender but coarse-textured beef in a mild red curry sauce. I also tried the coconut curry that featured soft chunks of boneless, skinless thigh meat in a mild coconut yellow curry.
I ordered the coconut chicken and picked noodles as my side for $5.99. The husband ladled some extra curry sauce over the noodles. The noodles were soft and sauteed with cabbage and onions. I didn't think to ask for lemon or cilantro to perk it up. It was good enough for the price, but not compelling. I'll probably check back in a few months to see if the menu has expanded. I told the owners I'd like to taste the lamb curry in the future.
