Last night, the boyfriend and I were searching for a casual Japanese restaurant in our neighborhood. We found Umi and it exceeded our expectations. They have a large selection of sake, fresh fish, and great grilled items. The notables:
Eggplant appetizer - grilled eggplant covered with a slightly peanut-y sauce. This dish had great texture - charred exterior and the soft interior. My only complaint is that the sauce was too salty and I had to eat it with rice.
Hamachi Kama - had the same great charred exterior and was quite a good deal for ~$9.
Sashimi - Really fresh slices of tuna, hamachi, aji, albacore, salmon, tako. This place definitely wins for freshest sushi in Potrero.
Overall, it was a great meal. Our waitress was a bit odd but we got everything that we asked for. I think this is a great addition to Potrero Hill and fits with the 18th St. atmosphere.
