Udupi palace in Berkeley

After reading several reviews (including hounds input), I gave this place a try since I want to know a real good Indian food. We tried Vik's chaat but was too crowded at 2 pm. At Udupi, we tried the combo plates and was surprised to receive many little "bowls" of different ingredients.

Thali combo is Udupi specialties and it includes 9 little bowls of various things: white yogurt like sauce, two tomato based soups, shredded cabbage with pungent spices, two thick vegetable paste (probably egglants) with some spices(curry?), pickles marinated in spicy red sauce, rice marinated in red coloured spicy sauce and a dessert of sweet milk with lentil paste. A good amount of rice is also served in a metal plate and a puffy bread. Thali is a great order, the spices and many different things provided were a delight and reminds me of Korean panchans. BTW all are vegetarian dishes.

My wife got another combo plate of iddly (white coloured soft but a bit dense rice cake) which is not really my favorite, wada (doughnut shaped & fried-ok) and dosa (large thin crepe with potatoes fillings-excellent). Chutney sauces and another tomato based soup is provided as dipping sauce (I guess).

I also got the yogurt mango which is another excellent choice. It's has smooth and viscous consistency similar to shakes but the non-overpowering mango sour note and the velvety smoothness really made this great.

Total cost is $25 including tips.
