Typical cost of artisan breads?

gmm | Feb 7, 201504:57 AM

I was chatting with a friend today and she mentioned her husband had gone to a new bakery that had recently opened in town. She said she was rather surprised to find out the loaf of bread he had purchased had cost $16. I looked up the menu of the bakery and the price of the breads on their regular menu is $20, the breads include baguette, epi baguette, sourdough, country loaf and whole grain. Maybe I've been away from the big city too long, but their pricing seems rather excessive to me. Thoughts?

Update to my original post -
Okay, now I think it might be an issue with their website not being quite complete. It looks like $20 is a default price for many items on that menu. Though I do see a screenshot of the bakery with challah priced at $14, I don't think they'd be able to get away with charging $20 for one sticky bun or the soup of the day. I'll reserve my annoyance until I see the pricing in person. I personally would not pay $20 for any loaf of bread, unless it's stuffed with some lobster salad. :)
