i was at turner's fisheries last night with a large party.
when we arrived our table was not ready and the hostess was uncommunicative and actually ignored us as we tried to find out if we should go to the bar or wait for them to set up. her manner in general was brusque. the service the rest of the was acceptable - not great, but acceptable.
the restaurant itself was cold - they have a huge atrium section and i guess it lets in a lot of cold air. i actually had my coat over my shoulders. no one ever asked if i was comfortable or noticed. the most intimate interaction i had was from one of the waitstaff instructing me (not asking me) to move my handbag from next to my chair to under my chair and then commenting 'that's nice' when i did it as if i was a 3 year old. which i found odd.
but anyway, onto the food:
to start i had the chopped salad, which was billed as iceberg, blue cheese dressing. it was actually tasty, they had also added fennel which was interesting but it was not what i was expecting. the tomatoes had suffered from refrigeration - they were seeded and diced. Clearly this salad had been made up ahead of time, put in the fridge, and then plated for me.
for an entree i had the sea scallops with brussel sprouts, smoked bacon and cider reduction. it was a nice presentation, however, there were three scallops. three. i found that a bit on the precious side. the scallops had a nice sear but were overcooked and tough. the brussel sprouts sliced thin and mixed in with the bacon - the sauce itself was a little sweet for my taste but i suppose that's the cider reduction.
i was not overly impressed.
the dessert was a huckleberry creme brulee. it was tasty but not the best i've had. it could have been denser.
anyway, it was an ok meal served with medicore service in a setting that was a bit too chilly. the three scallop thing has me chuckling still.
