Can I trust truffles puchased in a jar?

sugarcube | Feb 3, 2008 10:36 AM

On a recent trip to the States I stumbled upon black truffles sealed in a jar. The label states they were 'Black Winter Truffles- tuber indicum' by Saveurs de la Terre.

For about 25grams (0.88oz) it cost $7-8 in total
Ingredients: Winter truffles tuber indicum, water, salt.

They were a product of France and imported by Encore Specialty Foods (Hingham, MA, USA)

While I would much prefer the real thing when I can find it (I live a few hours away from Toronto), in the meantime are these truffles a reasonable substitute or should I steer clear of them completely?

Thanks in advance :)
