True bird chiles at Eataly

MikeG | Aug 28, 201508:16 PM

While the longer (1-2 inch) "Thai chiles" aren't that uncommon, one doesn't often see these very tiny ones around these parts, but I came across true "bird" or "rat dropping" chiles (พริกขี้หนู / phrik khi nu) at Eataly this evening. They're expensive at $20/lb, but they're also lightweight, so there are a LOT of chiles in a pound. There were also, unfortunately, a fair number of shriveled/soft ones among the mostly good ones. Since it was late when I saw them and I didn't have the patience to pick through them tonight, I didn't buy any yet so can't say how they taste or just how spicy they are. But I expect to be back in that neighborhood tomorrow and will stop by again in the hope of grabbing at least a quarter or third of a pound....
