Trip Report Long

I LOve New Orleans Food! | Nov 5, 2004 06:51 AM

Came back from a graet trip to NOLA. We had a large group of 16 people and everyone had a blast. Here is the long story short as possible.
Gabrielle on Wednesday night, excellent service, the room we had was a seperate room behind the main dining room of the restaurant, so we didn't get the true feeling of its atmosphere. Very good food. I had the foie gras on a pigs ear appitizer, excellent! I had there famous duck, very good, could have been warmer, but it was very good. Great chocolate pecan pie!!! With so many people I can not even begin to remember all the food. I remember someone had rabbit and loved it, filet mignon stands out too.
Commanders Palace on Thursday Night as well as Bayona
My daughter her husband and my husband and I ate at the kitchen table. I ate there 3 years ago and it was much bettter. First of all the 1st time was a Saturday night and there was such energy in the kitchen. It was an amazing experience just to watch the action. The food was better too, this time too many fish and shellfish courses. Last time a much better mix of different foods. But the experience in a whole especially for my daughter and husband as first timers was really good. They treat you like royality and Danny Trace who happened to be our chef last time as well, is a fun and interesting person. I however would not do it a third time. I would say if you are a foodie and love to cook as well, it is a once must do type of thing.
The other couples who ate at Commanders that night, three people raved one said it was just ok.
The people that ate at Bayona LOVED it. I ate there last year and thought is was fantastic too. They had the sweetbreads(to die for they said)and veal was something else they mentioned as well. Sorry to be vague. But they loved the atmoshere, the service and the food.
Friday Brigtsens
EVERYBODY LOVED IT!!! The food was amazing, just amazing. From the butternut shrimp bisque to the oysters and shrimp au gratin, to the seafood platter, drum fish, sweetbreads, the pork loin, everybody, all sixteen of us loved it!! That is saying a lot. The service was top notch, the place is small and warm, the best!!
Stella Saturday
The night of the big 50th birthday bash. I had been there 2 years ago and loved it, this time I was a little disappointed. They put us in there private dining room. I like there main room much better. There were other tables eating in there as well as our 2 tables of people. If we had wanted to book it for ourselves that evening they wanted a $2000.00 minium. The ceiling was drippping water on the other table of people I was with and they had to move it 2 times. But alas it was always leaking on at least one or two people. Nothing too major just a dripping from the air conditioner vent, but enough to be annoying and not even an offer of a drink on the house a complimentry dessert, zippo. With so many people, the birthday, the noise level, the atmosphere was not too important at that point. I can say is that the food was very good . Great veal madallions, bouillabaise, veal and shrimp won tons gnocchi lobster with cognac cream sauce, duck, everyone enjoyed there meal.
Sunday a free for all
Everybody did there own thing, a group went to the Gumbo Shop, claimed it was dirty and did not like it. One group went to Acme Oyster House, enjoyed it, I went with three others to Landrys. I have been there before and the food is solid and huge portions, it is very clean, and the servers are very attentive and polite. Good place to go after the Aquarium It is a safe haven just outside of the quarter, which after Saturday night the 30th of October was filthy, smelly and crowded.Two people went to Emerils and LOVED it!!!!One got a chicken dish and one a filet mignon.
Monday Cameila Grill
What can you say??? A great greasy spoon diner with part of the charm the show that they put on behind the counter.Good Cheap food, burgers, real old fashioned milk shakes, omelets the size of a dinner plate. I expected to see Fonzie and Richie walk in the door at any moment.
Then my trip was over!!! To sum it all up, great restaurants all of the above mentioned, would I ever travel with 16 in tow again NO!!!!!!!!! Next on my list that I have not made it to yet

and I ask for your opinions on my next to do list. I will always love Brigtsens, Bayona, Upperline and Stella from previous visits.
