Trip report: 5 days in Kansas City

Nineteen | Aug 31, 201601:50 PM

My husband and I were in Kansas City a few weeks ago for this year's World Science Fiction Convention. Had a great time and survived the hot weather (or so it seemed to me coming from the Bay Area).

We stayed at the Hotel Phillips which had some great Art Deco design (but was unfortunately undergoing renovation during our visit). After walking all over downtown KC on our first day, we ate at Cleaver & Cork. My husband really, really liked his strip steak, and my BBQ pork shoulder was good although I didn’t think the corn bread worked. Also the strawberry icebox pie didn't make sense to me. More like a strawberry puree on top of cheesecake.

The next day we took a short bus trip to Arthur Bryant’s for BBQ. I ordered the day’s special of rib tips, which I thought were too gristly — and I have a high tolerance for that kind of thing. My husband had the burnt ends which were decent. That evening we saw “Star Trek: Beyond” at the Alamo Drafthouse. Kind of cool to get some food while watching a movie, but unfortunately my spaghetti squash pomodoro was mediocre.

Next day I wanted something lighter so we tried the pizza bianca and a green salad at Il Lazzarone. Neapolitan style isn’t my favorite kind of pizza, but it seemed fine.

I thought the food was good at The Farmhouse. My husband had yet another steak (hanger this time) and I tried the pork confit. I really liked the sweet potato puree, and we enjoyed the peach crumble (although I would have preferred it warmed up).

We made it to Gates BBQ and split a plate of center cut ribs. I liked it much better than my order at Arthur Bryant's. I still have no idea of how I was supposed to order, though, as I guess customers start at the cash register (?). Someone at the convention recommended the North End for the fried chicken, which was tasty enough but didn't really stand out.

Hope that helps out somebody else looking for places to eat in Kansas City!
