Tri Tip - any simple salt and pepper folk?

I've never had tri tip and am currently defrosting one for the weekend. I planned a simple salt and pepper a few hours ahead of time but all the suggestions around here and the Internet seem to suggest a marinade or pretty strong dry rub. I am used to quite flavorful cuts - hanger, flap and flat iron being our usual steak choices. I've heard tri tip is beefy and flavorful, but next to these beef champs should I plan to season it more heavily?
