Just returned home from dinner at town hall. We got off to a slow start that made me really want to dislike the restaurant, but overall, the food was great.
Went with my husband and my mom who is in visiting for mother's day. We had a 7:45 reservation, but were not seated until 1/2 hour after that. And we were squished into a table for two at the back of the restaurant. The waiter was slow to attend to us, and it took a particularly long time to receive our food after ordering. The busboy was right on with his service, and very attentive though.
For appetizers, my husband had the steamed mussels with shoe string potatoes and I had the spinach salad with cornmeal fried oysters. The oysters were done to perfection, but the salad itself was overdressed and while the dressing had a nice licorice flavor to it, overall the flavor was a bit bland.
Mom and hubby both had the ribeye steak with crispy potatoes and creamed leaks. They both were a bit surprised that the steak was in a sauce - had they known in advance they wouldn't have ordered the dish, but they were glad they had. The flavor of the steak was outstanding and it was tender too. And they both thought the creamed leaks were excellent. I had a taste and would have to agree. I had the mussels for my entree and again, the flavor was exceptional - a nice spice too the dish, but not overly spicy. And the shoe string potatoes rivaled some of the best I have ever had. All portions were generous, and the mussels made a perfect size entree, would have been too much for me as an appetizer.
For dessert, we shared the hot chocolate, butterscotch and chocolate pot de creme and the mississipi mud cake with coffee ice cream. I thought the hot chocolate and pot de creme were very good and would order again, but would pass on the mississipi mud cake next time - my husband enjoyed that one though.
At the end of the meal, I mentioned to our waiter that after 1/2 hour delay on our reservation, and being stuffed into a table for two, I really wanted to dislike the food, but found it to be excellent. He answered that on top of that we didn't receive such hot service from him either and he apologized and all of our desserts would be on the house. The woman in charge of the front of the house came over to apologize as well and said they had an extremely busy night, and that just meant it was their fault that we were not treated better and reiterated that dessert would be on the house and that next time we came in, she promised better seating and service.
So, in the end, the entire staff knows how to be professional, it seems that they were having a bit of an off night. Could be that the large party (about 30 people) in the private dining room upstairs is just more than they can handle with a full house on a Sat. night.
We will definitely go back again.
