Just had an absolutely delicious torta al pastor for lunch today at Tulcingo del Valle. I had set out with a taste for Daisy May's brisket, but was confounded, as I've been too many times before, by the place being unexpectedly--and inexplicably--shut tight.
Somewhat discouraged, I headed over to Tulcingo with the idea that I might get some tacos al pastor. On a whim, I decided instead to try the torta, which I specifically ordered with avocado in lieu of guacamole, much as I do the tacos. (NB: The menu says the torta comes with avocado, but I asked and the lady who said it actually comes with guacamole unless you say otherwise.)
I'd never had one of their tortas, and was pleasantly surprised with what I got. The al pastor was tasty as usual, and the roll and fillings were reasonably fresh. I especially liked the thin slice of mexican cheese (queso blanco?), the long strips of jalapeno, and the sliced red onion that came therein. And all for only about $5.
From now on, I think I'll get the torta.
