Had lunch at TG the other day for first time in several years. Tasting notes follow:
Appetizer: Calamari Griglia. This was very nicely done, whole pieces cut halfway through. Served with a lemon-butter-herb sauce. Very tasty and memorable. Still, the version at Pizza Capri (Belmont / Sheffield)... or should say versions is as good or better. But this was nice start. Just enough for a small helping for two.
Pasta 1: Meat Tortellini Alla Panna w/ mushrooms, sweet peas, pancetta & parmesan. A bit too "mushroomy", not bad, but probably the low point of the meal.
Pasta 2: Rigatoni Filo d Fumo w/ a pomodoro sauce, pancetta, mozarella & basil. Very tasty chewy pasta w/delicious sauce. Probably the high point.
Dessert: Tiramisu. Luscious cream & ladyfinger base. Thick and substantial, not "moussy". Detracted a bit by an annoying layer of excessive cocoa powder on top. A very light dust would have worked much better. But overall quite good.
Coffee was at best fair... Dunkin' Donuts coffee would have been a treat.
The place is attractive, high ceilings, nice table settings. Wouldn't turn down a meal there but not in a rush to return either.
Overall I'd rate Trattoria Roma across the street somewhat higher, and very BYOB friendly. They also prepare more complex dishes. Nearby, also prefer Vinci on Halsted in the upper-midrange...
