Had breakfast this morning at the Deluxe Town Diner in Watertown. The small stack of flapjacks ($4.25, IIRC) was fantastic - large, light and fluffy and accompanied by real maple syrup but the fruit cup ($2.00) I ordered as a side was very mediocre. When is someone going to put some effort into a fruit salad? Just because it's a simple concept doesn't mean you don't even need to try. This one was a tiny dice of mostly melon (honeydew and cantalope), with a couple of grapes and pieces of (canned-tasting) pineapple. (Aside: Does anyone know of a place that does a truly outstanding fruit salad?) The atmosphere is great, especially during the week when it's less crowded. Our waitress couldn't have been sweeter.
Went to Fugakyu in Brookline for lunch. Wasn't too hungry after my pancakes but managed to put away three orders of sashimi: freshwater eel, salmon and fluke. The salmon was outstanding. Large meaty/juicy pieces with a great buttery finish. The fluke and eel were both very good. The service (at least at lunch) always feels rushed, which is a shame because the screened booths make it a nice place to linger over quiet conversation.
