Why is TJ's so cheap?

empty stomach | Jan 19, 2003 08:17 AM

Back home, we had a couple of "cheaper" supermarket - Safeway, QFC, etc. - and yet their cheese prices were a good 2-3 times that of Trader Joe's.

TJ's always fascinates me. It looks like an expensive, yuppie, place, and yet everything in there is consistently 10-20% cheaper than in a normal supermarket. In many cases, cheaper than Chinatown even. And yet it is the CHEESE which is really shocking.

I bought some Fontina at $3.99/lb. QFC has it at $13.99! Brie, $2.99, was $8.99 at Safeway. Same brands, etc.

I just don't get it.
