Tides review -- great place

Heeding djk's advice, i went down to Tides on Friday...and yes, it's a winner...

Things started off a little rocky: i'd called that same day and a woman who answered told me they open at 6 and don't take reservations,"first come, first serve" we walked down there and arrived at 6:15...a guy opened the door and asked us if we had a reservation (uh-oh) and said they were completely booked...errr...i told him about the earlier phone call, so he pondered briefly, then gave us a table...and, the fine quality of the food quickly redeemed any confusion...

As djk said in his review, the fried clams/oysters are wonderful: tender long strands of fresh clam in a light batter, reminiscent of delicate Kyoto tempura, ...a great starter and so addictive that we immediately ordered a second one...we shared the grilled pompano (perfectly crispy on the outside, tender within) and an order of grilled vegetables, and two glasses of house white wine...the bill was 63 dollars plus tip for a totally satisfying summer dinner...

As the place has only been open a week, there are some slight glitches that need to be ironed out (e.g. the reservation policy)...the very friendly owner/manager Steve (who told us he worked in software before this) said the wine list is still a work in progress (be forewarned: the Long Island rose is quite sweet -- i tried it and sent it back)...and the waiter should have told us that the pompano came w/ the same grilled vegetables that we ordered a side of (not that we minded eating more of them, but we prob would have ordered the haricot verts instead if we'd known)...but these are minor quibbles and totally normal for a place just starting up...overall: highly recommended
