Tried the tidal pool appetizer at Ilo tonight. It's a the best 6 dollars worth of Miso soup I've ever had. Unfortunately they're charging 16 dollars for it. The broth is rather complex but as I envision Rick Laakonen getting the idea from that iron chef episode where the chef dumps about twenty pounds of bonito flakes into one vat of soup. I must say that it did have more depth than your typical japanese style soup with subtle hints of dill and anise that my burned out taste buds were still able to disseminate. It left me craving more fishy flavors but that was more than satisfied by a plate of bbq squid at Kang Suh but that's another story.
