Thx for sending us to Maya - longish

Several weeks ago I asked Chowhounds for a recommendation for dinner near Yerba Buena Center, and following several suggestions, we tried Maya. It's a pretty place, with a pleasant, unhurried atmosphere and attentive service. My husband had the Dine on the Town fixed price dinner, which allows choice from almost everything on the menu (but excludes guacamole as an appetizer, seems odd). He had tacos de atun for an appetizer, and camarones azteca for an entree. I started with the quesadillas surtidas, and then had the lobster and shrimp entree, name of which I've forgotten.

The quesadillas got the prize in the appetizer category. Deep fried masa fritters, filled with wonderfully melted cotija cheese, served really hot and beautifully presented. The tuna was fine, but not as memorable. The seafood in the entrees was done to perfection, and the sauces were unusual.

The only disappointments were the coffee and dessert. The coffee was served in a beautiful Taxco silver pitcher, but it was indifferent at best. We shared the flan, which was one of two choices on my husband's pris fixe. It really wasn't flan, rather a lot more like jello, way too light and mild. I'd thought I'd heard that Maya's had spectacular desserts, and I was disappointed. I was never offered the regular dessert menu, an oversight on the server's part, but what we got did not impress.

Still, I thought it was a perfectly enjoyable dinner, good food and good value for the price, so thank you to all who recommended it.
