The first time I had Masaman curry was sometime back in the 1980s, when Thai places were popping up all around Los Angeles. It was always wonderfully tender stewed beef cubes, obviously slow cooked to a near fall-apart texture you could easily cleave with a fork.
Since moving to the Bay Area, I've yet to find a single Thai restaurant that makes Masaman curry with tender meat. The sauces are basically the same, but the meat is always tough strips of beef, chicken, etc, and it's always disappointing, not the wonderful melt-in-your-mouth comfort food I remember. Often, the potatoes are undercooked as well.
Can anyone recommend a Bay Area Thai restaurant that makes a tender beef cube Masaman in the the way I described above? I'm in the Berkeley area, but any suggestions welcome.
