tea cakes & cookies

I seem to be buying a lot of little cakes lately, although none of them has been completely satisfying.

At Arizmendi I noticed a green tea shortbread and made the mistake of forgoing a ginger shortbread for it. I drink a lot of tea but remain to be convinced green tea is a good flavor for much aside from rice or those matcha brownies at Samovar. The green tea truffles at XOX made me regret I hadn't had another caramel.

I picked up a blueberry cream cheese tea cake at Arizmendi ($5), a small loaf that reminded me of a fluffy pound cake. Airy and cute but forgettable.

I'm also in the market for a good spicy gingerbread without having to learn how to bake or beg my friends who do. I've tried Tartine's (~$6) and it's nowhere near gingery enough. Most of the gingersnaps I've bought have too much molasses or butter, not enough snap.

Any recommendations for favorite tea cakes or cookies? Preferably something bite sized to accompany a pot of Assam or Lapsang Souchong on a rainy afternoon. The almond rochers at Tartine come close, although I prefer merengue that's slightly stickier.
