I finally got around to the Tea Room at Tamarind that I read about in Chownews(hint, subscribe now! it's invaluable to even constant Chowhound readers like myself) It WAS Valentine's Day but it was past rush hour at 2 o clock and the service was oddly slow. The food was worth waiting for.
The Salmon sandwich was the winner over the Lamb that I ordered. It had a delicious piquancy that worked so well with the rich and smokey fish. The yogurt dipping sauce was well spiced and amply portioned. As mentioned before here the deal is two Large sandwiches, a mini salad, yogurt sauce, two pots of tea, and a large pastry assortment for $25.00.
The pastry assortment was two chocolate cookies, macaroons, rice pudding, vermicelli pudding, banana cake, and a fennel seed cookie. The fennel seed cookie was a standout of a Pecan Sandy gone Bombay. I'm a sucker for anything that comes out of a banana peel and the cake was no different. A bit dry on the edges, I hope due to the late hour but well flavored with a thick cream cheesey frosting.
This place is as gracious as the grander Tamarind next door is. T
