Tazzos Tacos

BoogieDown | May 20, 2005 03:46 AM

I was driving into downtown from Highland park and I was thinking--I wish there was more of a variety to eat around these parts......Lo and Figueroa Ave. and approximately Ave. 42 I saw a newer taco placed called Tazzos. I dropped in and ordered a carne asada burrito. Lordyyy Lord, Damn, that thing was good. One of the best burritos I have had in a long while actually. The carne asada was nicely marinated meat (overnight I found out) of good quality. The burrito came in a great large flour tortlla (which I think is not talked about as essential for great burritos enough)with pinto beans and rice. You get the typical cilantro and onion mix along with a choice of a red salsa or a chunky tomatillo green salsa. I chose both salsas and actually liked both of them for different reasons. The red salsa is thin and spicy, in the classic taqueria style, while the salsa verde looked like the tomatillas and chile were cooked over an open flame then chopped to a chunky consistency. The burrito is $3.15. There is an all meat option for one dollar more.

My partner ordered two asada tacos and a quesadilla. The asada tacos are served in two 6 inch corn tortillas. They were packed with meat and were $1.15 each. The quesadillas was made with Carnitas and comes in a flour tortilla that is grilled when ordered, cost was $3.15. He said both of them were good, although I didnt try them. There are a few plastic tables and chairs in a covered patio area that is kept clean and well kept.

Other things I want to try in the near future are the tortas, the combination plates and the nachos. All of these are made with a choice of chicken, carne asada, carnitas or al pastor made on the premises (which wasnt ready yet when I was there today)

A neat thing that I found out was that the restaurant delivers for free, just like a pizza place, to a radius of 3 miles with a minimum order of $9.99. So for those people in the Montecito Heights, Highland Park and Mt. Washington areas, here is a place to order from. They stay open until 10 pm I believe. One pet peeve is that drinks are pedestrian--coke, diet C, Sprite and water. Would be nice to have freshly made lemonade or traditional aguas frescas..but I can overlook this for the good food.
