I've been lucky enough to try several of the well known tasting menus in Toronto over the past few years -- Colborne Lane, Splendido, Canoe's "Haida Gwai" menu, Alo, Edulis, etc. Until today, my vote would go to Alo as the best value.
Today for lunch I went to Nakamori in Scarborough and had the $40 omakase. This turned out to be a 6-course tasting menu that would be at home in the above list, but at this price point it is an absolute marvel.
The meal started with three different two-bite appetizers, followed by a bowl of lemony fish soup with several chunks of fish; a rice bowl topped with strips of perfectly cooked beef and fall vegetables in an onion-miso reduction; a tempura shrimp with wasabi sauce and a piece of fried chicken with mango sauce; a sushi plate with five pieces; and for dessert, home made miso ice cream with salted caramel sauce (the chef's invention). We were happily stuffed.
There was only one occupied table when we arrived, and only one other table came in while we were there. This restaurant should be jammed -- it's a destination lunch. Just get in your car and go. Googs has been talking up this place for over a year, and she is absolutely right.
