Batali is long gone, and you don't hear much about Po anymore. This was Batali's first location, and it is on a great block, Cornelia off Bleecker. Across from Pearl Oyster Bar. The place is cozy, the wait staff is exceptional, patient, and accommodating. The 6 course tasting menu is only $56.
The portions are bigger than most tasting menus. You leave very stuffed.
we started with an amuse of crostini with cannellini beans on top. Then some marinated anchovies on a bed of quinoa, these were excellent.
Next was a beet salad with salata ricotta ,that was quite good. Then we had a tortelloni stuffed with codfish, topped with a tomato sauce. This was delicious. The next was a second pasta course of gnocchi with a traditional bolognese sauce. Very good dish. The next was crispy sweetbreads over spaghetti squash ,with some pickled onions, A creative wonderful dish. Then a cheese course of 4 cheeses with a sweet fruit compote accompaniment . Last was dessert of a cold fudge brownie topped with vin santo, and another dessert of warm apple tart topped with vanilla ice cream.
This restaurant is truly a great place to eat. The special pasta of the nite was tagliarini with 3 types of mushrooms, some olive oil and butter, and truffle oil. The waiter 's favorite is the orrechiette with sausage and brocolli rabe. The pressed Guinea Hen was also recommended. In the tasting menu, you don't really have a choice, the chef creates what he wants , and each table may get different dishes. It's up to the chef.However, if you really want something in your tasting menu, the chef will more than likely meet your r equest.
