I've read a lot about the great work being done at Niche in St. Louis which is on Sidney Street, and last night I went to the informal side of Niche, which is Taste by Niche. It was a great experience.
Taste, is a small spot, able to seat only 16 persons or so and their menu board is geared more toward small plates. Knowing the restaurant knows their business we stuck strickly to the specials on the menu board and ordered everything on the board!
But first we had to have a cocktail, and on a nice warm St. Louis summer evening a cold cocktail sounded refresshing and it was. We asked the bartender to "make us something good" and he queried us on our general tastes etc. Shortly after fixing us a couple tasty cocktails I asked Ted our bartender, "are you Ted K?" which meant Kilgore. Ted Kilgore is well known and a person that makes drink preparation and creation to a new level. I had read about Ted in a magazine or two and St. Louis publications. Anyway Ted made me a refreshing mojito, not a "normal" but with nice twists that I can't identify. My spouse had a delicious pomegranet cocktail with orange zest and it also was tasty. So just give Ted the "green light" and I'll be you'll be happy.
So the small plates included a cheese plate as well as a sausage/salami plate both served with some crostini, some ground mustard, a sweet blueberry paste with the cheeses. All good. As a more "main course" we tried a chicken liver pate that was tasty as well as rib-eye crostini which was terrific.
So I'll go back and I look forward to my first visit to the restaurant for the full menu at Niche. Tell me about your experience if you've been to either.
Still hungy and thirsty..
