Taste Lunches in PG

e.d. | Aug 1, 2004 02:04 PM

Reading Susancinsf's post about the lunch from the twilight zone, I felt bad that I had not mentioned two wonderful lunches I had at Taste--which is located on Forest after it has bent eastward and joined up with Hwy 68 (across the street from the Safeway and actually up at the top of the hill/ridge above New Monterey).

Anyway, I had a good Crab cake sandwich, that came with OK thin French fries. There was a light smear of thousand island dressing on the bread, carmelized onion and roasted bell pepper topped the cake. The crab cake had a pleasant, slightly fishy flavor that might not have worked by itself, but was wonderful in a sandwich. But the best meal I had there (and it is on the dinner menu as well) was chicken sausages with red cabbage, au gratin potatoes, and carmelized onion. Everything went together very well. The red cabbage was especially wonderful, spiced with cloves and all spice. Better (no, truthfully, way better) than my German grandmother ever made.

If I had had more time on the peninsula, I'm sure I would have gone there for dinner as well. I have had a good dinner there in the past. The service was fine, the menu interesting, the wine list OK (lacking vintage dates), and the bread good. All in all a good choice for lunch or dinner.
