I can't believe it's not butter! It wasn't butter, but the pain au chocolate was wonderfully buttery; it had all the pleasure without any of the heaviness. This isn't a crumble in the breeze version, instead there's a nice heft in the zillions of pastry layers, and I could almost feel each and every layer as I chomped on the pastry. Good chocolate filling too.

Of course I couldn't miss the cannele, one of my favorite confections of any sort. This version here is rustic and very hefty. The caramelization is more than skin deep, there's a thick armor of sweet crisp. But the interiors seem to be a bit too stiff and only slightly moist. Nevertheless, the unmistakable orange flavor works very nicely.

I should confess that I like the version at Boulange de Cole more (maybe because I'm used to it, used to have several a week), In contrast to Tartine's version, BdC's rendition is more delicate, the surface ever so thin, the interiors much more moist and custardy. It also costs slightly less ($1.50 vs $1.75 at Tartine) but because of its gentle, delicate nature, is also more fragile and is likely to have less of a shelf life (i.e. eat it NOW).

We fell for the dark immense pleasure from the chocolate cake; it was extremely smooth on the palate and so full of good chocolate flavor.

The plum upsidedown cake was fruitty love affair. The intense plums top off a well made cake that is soaked with the juices from the fruit.

This is yet another of the those places that opened after I left town. I was jealously reading the posts from afar. Good thing I had a chance to try it on this trip.
