Tampopo: go often, go early?

FJ Young | Dec 4, 200204:17 PM

After reading about Tampopo on Lincoln Ave. further down on the board, my girlfriend and I have eaten there twice since we moved here in September.

Both times, we have thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, feasting on such items as Age Dashi Tofu (not that bland little block of tofu I've had elsewhere--but creamy, flavorful, and generously sized with a delicious sauce), chirashi served on top of salad, great spicy tuna rolls, ramen, extra-good miso soup, and more.

The only problem has been that by the time we finished eating, both times, we were the only ones left in the house. And this wasn't particularly late--around 8:00, once on a Wednesday and once on a Saturday. There were other diners when we arrived (mostly Japanese), but they were mostly gone by the time our entrees arrived. And both times, the waitress didn't seem to be in that great a mood--perhaps because we kept her on her feet later than usual?

Does Tampopo mostly cater to a lunch crowd? It would make sense, as the neighborhood doesn't seem very residential. But I know that others mentioned eating dinner there. What time or what day of the week do you recommend going, for those of us who enjoy more of a social buzz with dinner?
