Wife is pregnant, but today it was me with the craving: tamales
Started at El Burrito Mercado and felt awkward passing on about a dozen incredible looking offerings to just order 2 tamales. They were super and that place deserves all the talk it gets here.
Walked up a few doors to Mi Tierra. I hadn't been there before..noticed tamales not on the menu, but they were up as a special on the wipe-off board. Overall, tasty, but borderline too salty (green tamales here). White in color, loosely packed and chunky pork was fattier than the shredded variety. The (red) salsa was spicy and had a great smoky flavor.
Stopped at El Taquito on my way back to work. One green and one red tamale -- neither seemed fresh and the whole thing was dry. Practically burned my hand through the tin foil they were so hot. Not a whole lot of flavor happening. (Also ordered a chorizo taco, got beef).
Questions: Aside from Mercado Central in Mpls, which is a favorite, where is El Burrito's competition for "top tamale"?
Also: Noticed "JT's Hamburgers". I've driven that road 1,000 times and somehow have never seen the place. Maybe because it's about the size of a winnebago...who knows. Anyone familiar and is it worth a stop?
