Tamale time

If you buy your masa preprepared do you doctor it up? I was always told to whip my masa until a spoonful floated in water. I get mine prepared from cardenas and then add a bit of broth, or lard, and some of my cooking juices... i have not tried yet with scratch masa. Curious what you do
