Some Vietnamese American friends of mine introduced me to broken rice at Com Tam, a small Vietnamese restaurant in a strip mall. For those who don’t know what broken rice is (and that included me until a few days ago), it’s just steamed rice where the grains are broken, and therefore, shorter. They have a variety of rice plates, vermicelli bowls, and noodle soups. I ordered a combo plate with shredded pork, grilled pork chops, shrimp egg roll, and steamed egg over broken rice. The steamed egg was also new to me – basically a dense steamed omelette with carrots, ground pork, bean threads etc. I enjoyed everything on my plate but it was too much for me to finish, even though I tried. If I’d rationed myself, I could have saved half for another meal ad still been full. A great deal at $4-5 a plate. The food was probably laden with salt or MSG because the rest of the afternoon, I was guzzling water (the heat didn’t help). Still, I’d go back.
