A tale of two Luccas

svL | May 20, 2003 05:40 PM

There are two Lucca Italian delicatessens in San Francisco: one on Valencia in the Mission district, the other on Chesnut in the Marina. Since we live in Noe, we usually go to the one in the Mission, but on Sunday, after a gorgeous walk and jog -- perfect weather! -- at Chrissy Field, we stopped by the Chesnut branch to get some bread, cheese, prosciutto, salami, bresaola, etc. for a picnic lunch. The place was packed with people who had the same idea, but went fairly fast. (The meats we got turned out to be great, especially the Italian prosciutto, by the way.)

While in the store I noticed that nowhere do they indicate that there is another Lucca in San Francisco. Not only that, but the signs they have in the store vaguely imply that they are the only Lucca in SF. Strange. So my question is, are they related? Or did they use to be related and eventually separated but kept a common name?
