Taiwanese Collides With The Deep South in Hacienda Heights

Chandavkl | Jan 12, 201504:51 PM

These days most boba parlors also serve Taiwanese snacks along with their selection of drinks. Boba shop fare is generally fairly standard and not particularly noteworthy from a chowish point of view. But I do have to commend Tenju Tea House in Hacienda Heights for putting its version of the Southern favorite, cream corn nuggets, onto their menu. It blends right in with the popcorn chicken, fried tofu, fried fish cake, etc., but is intriguingly different. I'm curious whether they picked this up from boba shops in the South that serve this item, or whether they thought of it separately. Thick crusted and crispy, it holds a deliciously sweetened version of cream style corn. I'm glad I live 25 miles away because this stuff is addicting and probably not good for me. Tenju Tea House is inside the Champion Gourmet store on Azusa Ave. in the 99 Ranch shopping center. I don't know if the Temple City Tenju has this dish.
