Tacos Abuelo is the cutest food wagon, brightly painted and parked just off the San Martin exit from 101. I stopped here a couple weeks ago. It's been here for about three years, and the brothers who operate it named it after their grandfather.
I tried three kinds of tacos, $1.75 apiece, and took a seat at a table under the protective canopy. The plate came with grilled onions, jalapeño, and a wedge of lime. The tortillas were softened nicely without added oil. The salsas were kind of generic, nothing special. Best of the lot was the buttery textured lengua. Both the carnitas and suadero had dried out, perhaps a problem at the end of the day?
Tacos Abuelo has a gravel parking lot that allows for easy access. Several phone orders came in while I was there and a steady stream of customers pulled up. While not a destination, Tacos Abuelo makes for good snacking when passing this stretch of highway.
