I always look forward to a lunch at the Pakistan Tea House (176 Church Street, Manhattan) to make my jury duty stints bearable but yesterday found the line out the door and down the block. So, looking around for an alternative I found Taco House right next door (178 Church at Duane Street). Checking it out, there was something unexpected about the place: Mexican menu but looked like a Chinatown restaurant in every other way. Sure enough, this is a Chinese-run restaurant turning out amazing Mexican food. Picture Mexican-style beef, shrimp and chicken dishes flame grilled with true Cantonese flair. Char not to be believed. Not strictly authentic Mexican perhaps but as a hybrid a real find. And my plate came in at $2.99.
